Don’t Bail on workers! #StopGlyphosate and Reduce Harmful Pesticides

On 18 September, EFFAT attended a conference hosted by MEPs and Pesticide Action Network Europe: ‘Is Glyphosate Safe for Health and the Environment?’ The event was hosted by MEP Jutta Paulus of The Greens, MEP Christophe Clergeau from S&D, and Pesticide Action Network Europe (PAN Europe). Scientists presented their research findings regarding the detrimental effects of glyphosate on both human health and the environment and criticized significant shortcomings in the assessments conducted by the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) and the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) in relation to the potential hazards of glyphosate and its impact on health and the environment.

EFFAT’s primary concern is the health and safety of agricultural workers, reaffirmed by the scientists’ findings ( see EFFAT position on Ending the use of glyphosate and building a more sustainable agriculture).

After the conference, EFFAT joined forces with scientists, civil society representatives, and MEPs, holding a public action in front of the European Parliament. The protesters not only called for a glyphosate ban but also urged the prompt adoption of a strong Regulation on Sustainable Use of Pesticides (SUR). EFFAT, representing nearly 10 million workers, advocated for an immediate glyphosate ban, rigorous monitoring, clear employer responsibilities for safety and health, and access for agricultural workers to official pesticide documentation.

The European Commission is expected to propose glyphosate’s re-approval, with a Review Report presented to Member States in September and a vote in October.
