Ahead of this week EU-ASEAN Commemorative Summit, EFFAT wrote a letter to the Embassy of Cambodia in Brussels, demanding the immediate release of Chhim Sithar, President of Cambodia’s Labour Rights Supported Union (LRSU), unfairly arrested on 26 November 2022 after her return to Cambodia from the 5th ITUC Congress in Melbourne, Australia.
Sithar’s arrest is clearly in breach of both Cambodian law and the Royal Government of Cambodia’s international labour and human rights obligations.
On occasion of this week’s Summit, EU and Asian leaders are going to welcome a new 2023-2027 Action Plan, detailing their strategic partnership in many areas, including the promotion of decent work.
EFFAT urges EU leaders to exert pressure to ensure that their strategic partnership underpins the respect of trade unions rights.
The letter was also shared to the EU Delegation to the Kingdom of Cambodia and the European Parliament’s Delegation to South-East Asia.
