Cargill Calls for Restructuring – EFFAT Affiliates Answer with Unity

Cargill, the global agribusiness giant, revealed at the beginning of December plans to reduce its global workforce by 5%, amounting to approximately 8,000 employees. This decision marks the company’s largest restructuring initiative in the past 25 years, with Europe poised to experience a disproportionately higher percentage of reductions compared to the global average.

The announcement, which directly affects the white-collar workforce, has spread concern and uncertainty about the future. To address the challenges posed by this restructuring, trade unions in Europe are coming together under EFFAT coordination to defend the rights and jobs of the impacted employees.

Impact of Restructuring
The decision to downsize has raised significant concerns among employees, many of whom are uncertain about their roles and futures within the company. Amid changing market dynamics, the way this restructuring process is carried represents another case of blatant financialization. Such opaque approaches often lead to decisions that disregard transparency and workers’ involvement, leaving working lives in disarray while executives and investors reap the benefits.

For affected employees, unions are crucial.

Unity is Strength!
EFFAT along with its affiliated unions from The Netherlands, Germany, France, Spain, Belgium, Italy, and the United Kingdom have pledged to work together to find fair solutions for affected workers and those remaining. Proposed measures should include exploring internal reassignment opportunities, providing personalised training and support, and identifying other viable alternatives to mitigate the impact of the workforce reduction. The goal is to ensure that any decisions made prioritize the well-being of the workforce and reflect principles of union involvement, workplace democracy, transparency and respect for the information and consultation procedures on European and national levels. Going Forward
EFFAT has sent a letter to Cargill’s management, requesting a meeting to address the restructuring process through open and transparent dialogue and work towards a constructive solution.
