Safe Work + Secure Jobs + Union Rights = Safe hotels .
This past week Trade Unions across the globe have organized events around a global week of action for hotel workers.
Under the slogan Safe Work + Secure Jobs + Union Rights = Safe hotels, EFFAT joined forces with its UK affiliate Unite the Union and its international umbrella organisation IUF, and organised a joint webinar on December 1st. Many brave hotel workers took part, sharing their experience on how their global hotel chains responded to the COVID-19 crisis. Many comments and contributions made the event a very powerful opportunity of exchange and reflection.
Representing Hotel workers Europe wide, EFFAT put forward clear demands:
- We need secure jobs for all hotel workers and precarious working conditions must come to an end! Zero hour contracts, fixed term contracts and other forms of precarious working conditions are far too common for hotel workers.
- To address skill shortage in the Tourism sector, training and upskilling should be a key part of the recovery! Apprenticeships must be safeguarded to ensure a continuous influx of skilled workers in the sector
- Hotel workers need protection! Employers and authorities must ensure a safe workplace, meaning safe working procedures for workers, access to decent personal protective equipment and full sick pay from day one.
Hotel workers are the backbone of one of most important sectors of the European economy. The relaunch of the tourism sector must be a strategic priority of the EU recovery strategy
