On 3 October 2024, EFFAT participated in the ELA Launch Event in Rome, marking the kick-off of the The FairHORECAinEU, which aims to provide essential information on the rights of workers in the HORECA sector. EFFAT is a key partner in this campaign.
Virginie Demoucron, EFFAT’s Secretary for the Tourism sector, was invited to present a trade union perspective on the ELA report, which addresses the key issues and challenges faced by the HORECA sector. The report notably highlights:
- The vulnerability of the workforce
- The working and employment conditions in the HORECA sector, including low wages, precarious forms of employment, atypical and unpredictable work patterns, and long working hours
- The widespread presence of undeclared and under-declared work in the sector
- Some current challenges affecting the sector such as growing platformisation and the development to outsourcing practices
It also provides an overview of the state of social dialogue and collective bargaining in the sector, as well as the EU and national regulations Impcating the HORECA industry.
EFFAT highlighted the critical need to raise awareness among workers about their rights in this sector. It underscored the important role played by its national affiliates, showcasing innovative initiatives recently implemented, such as Hospitality Match, Ma Saison, Mettiamo il turismo sotto sopra Kein Respekt, Kein Service, Hoteles Laboralment Responsables , and other initiatives.
