EFFAT Executive Committee gathered today in Brussels to speak with one voice for progress and workers’rights
As the European Parliament prepares to vote on amendments to the Omnibus package on corporate sustainability and due diligence, EFFAT reiterates its call for progress, not regression, on workers’ rights, environmental protection, and responsible business conduct.
Just weeks after the Parliament’s rejection of the JURI Committee’s reckless mandate, trade unions and civil society once again urge Members of the European Parliament to defend Europe’s credibility on human rights and sustainability. Recent reports, that the EPP has been courting far-right forces in an effort to push through an even more destructive compromise, only underline what is at stake for Europe’s social and democratic values.
We are now at a crucial crossroads – said Enrico Somaglia, EFFAT General Secretary. This vote will decide whether Europe stays true to its promise of a fair, green and socially just society or whether short-term deregulatory interests prevail.
EFFAT welcomed the October decision of the pro-European MEPs who voted against the JURI mandate, blocking an attempt to drastically weaken the EU’s due diligence and sustainability reporting framework
Since then, EFFAT and its affiliates have continued mobilising across Europe, calling on all pro-European MEPs to stand firm in defence of:
- Comprehensive due diligence that covers the entire value chain including franchise and subcontracting networks.
- Civil liability provisions that guarantee access to justice for victims of labour and human rights abuses.
- Meaningful involvement of social partners
- Environmental responsibility.
A call for progress
EFFAT stresses that simplification must never mean deregulation. True progress lies in enforceable rules that make sustainability reporting more effective while maintaining strong protection for workers and responsible employers, communities, and the environment.
We call on every MEP to vote for an Omnibus position that strengthens, not undermines, Europe’s bastions of social and environmental protection.
Still unsure on why we need to stop the Omnibus?
